Lionsgate has released a new trailer for the upcoming comedy “Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar.”
Kristen Wiig and Annie Mumolo, who received an Oscar nomination for the screenplay for “Bridesmaids,” play best friends Barb and Star, who leave the Midwest for a vacation in the Florida beach town of Vista Del Mar. They soon become embroiled in a wild adventure where they find themselves at the center of a villain’s plot to kill everyone in town.
The new trailer is a clear parody of the hit Netflix series “Stranger Things,” complete with neon lettering, bicycles and flashing lights. The tone quickly changes to reveal the eccentric and silly nature of the film, which director Josh Greenbaum says attracted him to direct the project.
“I wanted this movie to feel like a vacation visually for people,” Greenbaum previously told EW about the film. “I heard the [initial] pitch and thought, ‘What the hell kind of movie is this?’ But when I read the script, it was really so different, and it was supposed to be a return to fun and silliness. It was a comedy script that didn’t take itself too seriously, even though it has a very sweet, emotional core in the middle.”
Wiig and Mumolo are also executive producers of the Lionsgate comedy, alongside Jessica Elbaum, Will Ferrell, Adam McKay and Margot Hand. The film also stars Jamie Dornan, Damon Wayans Jr, Fortune Feimster, Wendi McLeandon-Covey, Rose Abdoo, Vanessa Bayer, Phyllis Smith and Kwame Patterson.
“Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar” was originally scheduled to premiere July 31, 2020, but was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It will now premiere on February 12 via Premium VOD.
