Scheduled for release in summer 2021, Simu Liu plays Shang-Chi in Marvel Studios’ Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. Shang-Chi must face the past he thought he had left behind when he becomes entangled in the web of the mysterious Ten Rings organization.
The film’s cast also includes Tony Leung as Wenwu, Awkwafina as Shang-Chi’s girlfriend Katy and Michelle Yeoh as Jiang Nan. Also starring in the upcoming film directed by Destin Daniel Cretton are Fala Chen, Meng’er Zhang, Florian Munteanu and Ronny Chieng.
Now that production is complete, the full cast was revealed during The Walt Disney Company’s 2020 Investor Day presentation by Kevin Feige, president of Marvel Studios and Marvel’s chief creative officer.
The synopsis also includes an official Shang Chi cast list and the names of the characters, as well as Simu Liu as the lead. This includes Tony Leung (Chungking Express, Infernal Affairs) as Wenwu, Awkwafina (The Farewell) as Katy, Michelle Yeoh (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, Crazy Rich Asians) as Jiang Nan, Fala Chen (The Undoing) as Jiang Li, Meng’er Zhang as Xialing, Ronny Chieng (The Daily Show with Trevor Noah) as Jon Jon and Florian Munteanu (Creed II) as Razor Fist.
The Ten Rings organization has been a part of the MCU since the 2008 film Iron Man, in which members of the terrorists capture Tony Stark after his weapons demonstration in Afghanistan. The Mandarin reportedly debuted in Iron Man 3, played by Ben Kingsley, but the film revealed him to be little more than a washed-up actor named Trevor Slattery who was unwittingly hired by Aldrich Killian to serve as a cover for his Extremis-related criminal activities. However, the 2014 Marvel one-shot Hail to the King, also starring Kingsley, revealed that there was an actual Mandarin within the MCU and that he was quite interested in meeting the man who impersonated him on camera.
Shang-Chi began principal photography in February, but had to be suspended in March due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and finally resumed production in August. After filming wrapped in October, Liu celebrated the cast and crew’s achievement on Instagram, writing, “This shoot was a marathon like no other, punctuated by a massive four-month break in which the world was completely and irrevocably changed.”
