Netflix original Tribhanga: Story and movie –
Kajol plays the famous Odissi dancer, Anu, who has a grudge against her writer mother Nayan, played by Tanvi Azmi. In another generation, you see Anu’s daughter, Masha, played by Mithila Palkar, who is about to have a baby. You can see these three generations of women living their lives and facing their situation. The film explores the complexities of a mother-daughter relationship. The director attempts to show the impact a mother has on a child’s life until the child herself becomes a mother.
At the heart of the story is Anu’s resentment of her mother’s unconventional decision, which she believes ruined her life. The character played by OTT star Mithila Palkar reflects Shanane, while adding a new intergenerational perspective. Anu is almost exactly like her mother but doesn’t realize it until she has a daughter of her own. Although the film is not autobiographical, Shahane says that many parts of the film are related to her life and personal experiences.
Shahane took his love for Odissi’s dance and used it as a metaphor to describe his characters. Anu describes Nayan as the slightly off-center “abhang” pose, Masha as the balancing “sama-bhang” and herself as “Tribhanga”, the pose with three curves at varying angles.
Kajol announced his film on social media saying: “Tribhanga, matlab, tedhi, medhi, crazy, but sexy. #Tribhanga, premiere January 15, only on Netflix.
I look forward to leading Tribhanga. It’s an incredible opportunity and I feel very good about collaborating with Netflix on the film and knowing that it will be available worldwide on the same day! We have a great cast and a great story,” says Shahane.
